What are exterior wall panels?

Exterior wall panels are a separate sub-category from interior decorative panels because outdoor conditions are dramatically more demanding. Indian outdoor exposure includes direct summer sun at 45°C, monsoon rain for months, dust, pollution, bird droppings, temperature swings, and (in hill stations) freezing nights - all of which destroy interior-grade panels within months.

Exterior wall panels are designed to handle:
1. Direct UV sun without fading or yellowing.
2. Monsoon rain without absorbing water, swelling or growing mould.
3. Temperature swings (40°C summer to near-freezing winter in some climates).
4. Dust, pollution, bird droppings - wipe-clean surface.
5. 15-25 year exterior lifespan with minimal maintenance.
6. Wind load on facades (proper mechanical fixing required).

Material options for exterior:

1. WPC (Wood-Plastic Composite) - the most common exterior panel material. Wood fibres + plastic polymer = wood look with weather resistance. Rs 300-700 per sq ft installed. 15-25 year lifespan. Used for facade cladding, balconies, soffits.

2. ACP (Aluminium Composite Panels) - two thin aluminium skins around a polymer or mineral core. Premium architectural facades - office buildings, hotels, commercial exteriors. Available in solid metallic colours, brushed finishes, wood-look prints, stone-look prints. Rs 200-800 per sq ft installed. 20-30 year lifespan.

3. HPL EXTERIOR GRADE (compact phenolic-resin laminates) - high-end architectural facade panels. Very durable, fully UV-stable, premium-spec projects. Rs 500-1500 per sq ft.

4. FIBRE-CEMENT PANELS - natural stone-look panels with real cement core. Heavy but very durable. Used for stone-look facades.

5. EXTERIOR PU STONE PANELS - lightweight stone-look polyurethane panels for facade feature walls.

1. Wood-look WPC (walnut, teak, smoked oak) - the most popular exterior look. Gives homes a warm Mediterranean / Scandi feel.

Critical installation considerations:
1. PROPER MECHANICAL FIXING (rails + screws), not just adhesive. Wind load matters.
2. EXPANSION GAPS - exterior panels expand and contract with temperature; need 2-3 mm gaps at joints.
3. BACK-VENTILATION GAP - leave a small air gap between the panel and the wall to allow ventilation and drainage.
4. CORNER and edge profiles to keep water out of the cavity.
5. UV-STABLE adhesives and fixings only - standard interior products degrade outdoors.
