What are PU Stone panels?

PU Stone panels (Polyurethane Stone panels) are lightweight decorative panels with a highly realistic stone-look surface. They solve a specific design problem - you want the look of natural stone cladding on a wall, but you don't want to deal with the weight, cost, structural requirements and installation complexity of real stone.

How they're made:
1. Polyurethane foam core moulded into stone-like shapes.
2. Surface detailed with realistic stone texture, colour variation and joint lines.
3. Typically 15-25 mm thick at the highest peaks.
4. Some have a thin protective coating for outdoor use.

Common stone looks:
1. BRICK - red brick, cream brick, weathered brick, painted brick.
2. SLATE - dark grey, charcoal, multi-tone slate.
3. LEDGER STONE - modern stacked-stone look with varied size and colour.
4. COBBLE / RIVER STONE - rounded, textured natural stone.
5. SANDSTONE - warm beige, gold-toned natural stone.
6. LIMESTONE / TRAVERTINE - cream, warm beige.
7. MARBLE - Calcutta white, Statuario, Carrara, beige marble in stone-textured format.

Pros:

1. LOOKS LIKE REAL STONE. High-definition surface detail with realistic colour variation, texture grain and shadow lines between stones. At 2 m distance, indistinguishable from real stone for most viewers.

2. LIGHTWEIGHT. PU Stone typically weighs 1.5-2.5 kg per sq ft. Real natural stone weighs 25-40 kg per sq ft. This is a HUGE difference - PU stone installs on drywall with adhesive; real stone needs structural wall reinforcement.

3. EASY INSTALL. Construction adhesive on a flat, clean wall is enough. No structural engineering, no heavy lifting, no specialist installer. A typical 80 sq ft feature wall installs in a day.

4. INDOOR + OUTDOOR VERSIONS. Most PU stone ranges have UV-stable outdoor variants for exterior feature walls, fireplace surrounds (outdoor BBQ areas), garden walls.

5. DOESN'T NEED SEALING or annual maintenance. Real stone needs sealing every 1-2 years. PU stone is a set-and-forget surface.

6. NO COLOUR VARIATION BETWEEN PANELS in budget ranges - though premium ranges deliberately vary colour between panels for a more realistic look.

Cons:

1. HOLLOW SOUND vs real stone's solid thunk when knocked. Doesn't fool a touch test even though it fools a sight test.

2. NOT AS DURABLE under heavy impact. Real stone shrugs off bumps; PU stone can dent or chip if hit hard with a sharp object.

3. PATTERN REPEAT - budget PU stone has a visible repeat pattern over a few panels. Premium ranges have larger repeat distances for a more natural look.

4. SURFACE CAN'T BE REFINISHED. If damaged, you replace the panel rather than repair.

Best uses:

1. FEATURE WALLS BEHIND TVs - slate, ledger stone, brick looks all popular.
2. FIREPLACE SURROUNDS - adds the stone-clad feel that fireplaces traditionally have.
3. FOYER ACCENT WALLS - slate or sandstone gives a strong first impression.
4. BAR WALLS - café-style brick or weathered stone behind a home bar or counter.
5. RESTAURANT and CAFÉ feature walls - exposed-brick aesthetic at a fraction of the cost.
6. EXTERIOR ACCENT PANELS - exterior-rated PU stone on facade feature areas.
7. POOJA UNIT BACK PANELS - limestone or sandstone for a warm spiritual feel.
8. GARDEN WALLS - exterior stone-look for landscape walls.
9. COMMERCIAL RECEPTION - hotel lobbies, retail showroom feature walls.
