Tiles

What adhesive should be used for tile installation?

Short Answer
Tile adhesive depends on the tile size, substrate and room. The right adhesive prevents tiles from popping off, hollow spots, and water seepage.

Tile-adhesive types and where to use them:
1. Type 1 - for small ceramic wall tiles in dry areas only. Rarely used in modern construction.
2. Type 2 - for medium ceramic tiles in dry or moderately wet areas. Bathroom walls (not floors).
3. Type 3 - for vitrified, large-format, and any wet-area tile (floors and walls). Better water resistance and bond strength. Standard for modern construction.
4. Type 4 - heavy-duty for very large slab tiles, outdoor, swimming pools and extreme conditions.

Trusted brands in India:
1. MYK Laticrete
2. Roff
3. Pidilite (Dr. Fixit / Bostik)
4. ARDEX
5. Weber

Do NOT use traditional cement-sand mortar for vitrified or large-format tiles - the bond is unreliable. Modern polymer-modified tile adhesive is essential.

Detailed Explanation

Tile adhesive (sometimes called thin-set, tile-fixing adhesive, or polymer-modified mortar) is the single most underrated decision in any tiling project. The right adhesive keeps tiles bonded for 25-30 years. The wrong adhesive (or worse, traditional cement-sand mortar) leads to tiles popping off the floor, hollow sounding tiles, water seepage, and expensive re-tiling 2-3 years later.

Indian standards define four main types of tile adhesive, each rated for specific applications:

TYPE 1 - Basic indoor wall adhesive.
For small ceramic wall tiles in dry indoor areas only. Lower bond strength, lower water resistance. Rarely used in modern construction except for very small jobs.

TYPE 2 - General-purpose indoor adhesive.
For medium-sized ceramic tiles in dry areas or moderately wet areas (kitchen backsplashes, bathroom walls - NOT bathroom floors). Better bond strength and water resistance than Type 1.

TYPE 3 - Modified flexible adhesive (the modern standard).
For vitrified tiles, large-format tiles, and any wet-area floor or wall (bathroom floors, kitchen floors, balconies, swimming pool walls). Polymer-modified for flexibility (handles slight substrate movement), water-resistant, and high bond strength. Standard for almost all modern construction in India.

TYPE 4 - Heavy-duty / extreme conditions.
For very large slab tiles (1200x2400 mm and up), outdoor tile, swimming pool underwater installations, industrial floors, hospitals and labs. Highest bond strength and chemical resistance.

Choosing the right type by application:
1. Bathroom floor → Type 3 (polymer-modified).
2. Bathroom wall (ceramic) → Type 2.
3. Bathroom wall (vitrified) → Type 3.
4. Shower wall → Type 3.
5. Kitchen floor → Type 3.
6. Kitchen backsplash → Type 2 or 3.
7. Living/bedroom floor → Type 3.
8. Balcony / terrace → Type 3 or Type 4.
9. Outdoor / swimming pool → Type 4.
10. Large-format slab (1200x2400 mm and up) → Type 3 or 4.

Trusted brands in the Indian market:
1. MYK Laticrete - one of the most widely used premium ranges.
2. Roff (a Pidilite brand) - popular and widely available.
3. Pidilite (Dr. Fixit and Bostik) - strong distribution and reliable.
4. ARDEX - premium European brand, used in commercial projects.
5. Weber (Saint-Gobain) - also widely used in commercial work.

Critical rules:

1. Do NOT use traditional cement-sand mortar for vitrified or large-format tiles. Vitrified tiles are non-porous, so cement mortar can't get a mechanical grip on them - they pop off within a year or two. Modern polymer-modified tile adhesive is essential.

2. Use the correct trowel size - typically 8-12 mm notched trowel for vitrified floors, 6-8 mm for ceramic walls, 20 mm for large slabs.

3. Back-butter large-format tiles - apply adhesive to BOTH the substrate and the back of the tile. Without this, you get hollow sounds and tile failure.

4. Allow the adhesive to cure (typically 24 hours) before grouting, and 48-72 hours before walking on the floor.

5. Buy from authorised dealers. Counterfeit tile adhesive is a real problem in the Indian market and causes major project failures.
