How do I measure my wall for wallpaper?

Short Answer
Wallpaper measurement is straightforward if you follow the process.

Step 1: MEASURE WALL DIMENSIONS
1. Wall HEIGHT (skirting top to ceiling) in metres or feet.
2. Wall WIDTH (corner to corner) in metres or feet.
3. Wall area = height × width.

Step 2: SUBTRACT DOORS / WINDOWS
1. Measure each opening.
2. Subtract from total wall area.
3. (Don't subtract small windows under 1 sq m if you want easy install.)

Step 3: PATTERN REPEAT CONSIDERATION
1. Find pattern REPEAT distance on spec (e.g. 64 cm vertical repeat).
2. For each piece, you need (wall height + repeat distance) for matching.
3. This significantly adds to material for large-repeat patterns.

Step 4: ROLL COVERAGE
1. Standard roll = 5.3 sq m (10 m × 0.53 m).
2. Wall area ÷ 5.3 = number of rolls.
3. ROUND UP to whole rolls.

Step 5: ADD WASTAGE
1. Small repeat (under 15 cm): +10%.
2. Medium repeat (15-30 cm): +15%.
3. Large repeat (30 cm+): +20%.
4. Diagonal / complex patterns: +20-25%.

FOR CUSTOM MURALS: no calculation needed - provide exact wall dimensions and the mural is printed to fit.

ORDER ALL ROLLS FROM SAME BATCH to avoid colour variation.

Detailed Explanation

Wallpaper measurement isn't complex but most buyers underestimate quantity because they forget pattern matching wastage. Getting this right saves delays and extra orders.

Step 1: MEASURE WALL DIMENSIONS

Measure each wall you're wallpapering:
1. HEIGHT - from top of skirting board to ceiling. Use a measuring tape, measure at multiple points (walls aren't always perfectly even).
2. WIDTH - corner to corner.
3. CALCULATE WALL AREA = height × width in metres or feet.

Example: Wall 3 m height × 4 m width = 12 sq m.

Step 2: SUBTRACT DOORS AND WINDOWS

Measure each opening:
1. Doors typically 0.9 m × 2.1 m = 1.89 sq m.
2. Windows vary - measure each.

Subtract from total wall area:
12 sq m - 1.89 sq m (door) - 1.5 sq m (window) = 8.61 sq m of actual wallpaper area.

NOTE: for small windows under 1 sq m, some installers don't subtract them from the calculation. Reason: you'll have to work around the window which involves additional cuts and small areas of wastage. Easier to plan extra for these.

Step 3: PATTERN REPEAT CONSIDERATION

Pattern wallpapers have a REPEAT DISTANCE - how often the pattern repeats vertically. Common repeats:
1. Small repeat: 1-15 cm (subtle pattern).
2. Medium repeat: 15-30 cm (standard pattern).
3. Large repeat: 30-100+ cm (designer or mural-style).

Why this matters: when you join two wallpaper pieces side by side, the pattern must align. For pattern matching, each piece needs to be cut at the right point in the repeat. This adds material.

For pattern-matched installations, you need approximately:
(Wall height + Pattern repeat) × number of pieces = total roll length needed.

Large repeat patterns waste more material at pattern-match points.

Step 4: ROLL COVERAGE CALCULATION

Standard European wallpaper roll: 10 m × 0.53 m = 5.3 sq m per roll (about 57 sq ft).

Wall area ÷ Roll coverage = Number of rolls needed.

8.61 sq m ÷ 5.3 sq m = 1.62 rolls.

Step 5: ROUND UP TO WHOLE ROLLS + ADD WASTAGE

Always round up - you can't buy half a roll.

1.62 rolls → round up to 2 rolls.

Add wastage:
1. SMALL REPEAT (under 15 cm) or PLAIN: +10% wastage → 2 × 1.10 = 2.2 → round up to 3.
2. MEDIUM REPEAT (15-30 cm): +15% → 2.3 → round up to 3.
3. LARGE REPEAT (30 cm+): +20% → 2.4 → round up to 3.
4. DIAGONAL or HERRINGBONE pattern: +20-25%.
5. CUSTOM-CUT installations (around fireplaces, niches): +25-30%.

FINAL ORDER: 3 rolls of standard repeat wallpaper for the example.

FOR CUSTOM MURALS:

No calculation needed. Provide exact wall dimensions to the supplier and the mural is printed to your exact wall size. No pattern repeat waste. No multiple pieces (mostly).

IMPORTANT: ORDER ALL ROLLS FROM THE SAME PRODUCTION BATCH

Wallpaper rolls produced in different production batches can have visible colour variation - even within the same SKU. The BATCH NUMBER is printed on each roll's label.

If you under-order and need to top up later, you may receive a different batch with visible mismatch. Always order conservatively - too many is better than too few.

Keep ONE UNOPENED ROLL in storage after installation for future repairs.

MEASUREMENT TIPS:

1. MEASURE TWICE before ordering. Calculation mistakes are expensive.
2. ACCOUNT for irregular walls (some walls aren't square).
3. PHOTOGRAPH walls with measurements written on photos as reference.
4. SAVE OFF-CUTS for repairs.
5. TOP-UP IS HARDER than over-ordering - order on the higher side.
6. FOR PROFESSIONAL INSTALL - let your installer verify measurements before ordering. Their experience catches measurement issues.
