Tile selection feels overwhelming because there are thousands of tiles in any showroom and dozens of specs. The simplest way to navigate it is to break the decision into 5 sequential steps. Get each step right and the next becomes easier.

Step 1 - ROOM: which room and what use?

Kitchen, bathroom (master / ensuite / powder room / guest), living room, dining, bedroom (master / kids / guest), foyer, study, balcony, terrace, parking, outdoor patio - each has different demands. The kitchen tile spec is different from the bedroom tile spec, which is different from the balcony tile spec. Start by being clear about which room and its use.

Step 2 - SURFACE: floor or wall? Wet or dry?

Floor tiles need durability + abrasion resistance + slip resistance.
Wall tiles have more design freedom - slip and abrasion aren't issues.
Wet area floor (bathroom, balcony, outdoor) needs anti-skid.
Dry area floor (bedroom, living) can be glossy or matte.
Wall in wet area (shower wall, kitchen backsplash) is fine with glossy ceramic.

Step 3 - MATERIAL & SPEC:

Material:
1. Ceramic - indoor walls only.
2. Vitrified (GVT, PGVT, DVT) - floors and walls, indoor and outdoor.
3. Full-body vitrified - heavy-duty floors, parking, industrial.
4. Porcelain (premium vitrified) - outdoor pavers, swimming pools.

Key specs to check:
1. PEI abrasion class:
   • PEI II - light residential, walls only.
   • PEI III - residential floor (bedrooms, living rooms).

NEVER skip this step. Order a sample of the tile you're considering. Take it home. Hold it against the wall you'll tile (or lay it on the floor). See it in:

The 4-step approach exists for one reason: making sure you love the tiles in your home for the next 25-30 years. Tile choices are essentially permanent, and a thoughtful buying journey is the best protection against regret.

Tile installation looks simple from the outside but the steps and their sequence are precise - get any one wrong and the floor fails within months. Hollow sounds, popping tiles, cracking grout, water seepage all come from skipped or rushed steps.

The full 10-step process:

Step 1 - Substrate preparation

1. Clean: remove all dust, oil, grease, paint, old adhesive, loose material.
2. Level: substrate must be within 3 mm flatness over a 2 m straight edge. Fill low spots with self-levelling compound.
3. Dry: substrate moisture below 4-5%.
4. Crack repair: any cracks in the slab filled and bridged.
5. Old tile removal: if re-tiling, all old tile, adhesive and grout removed back to a sound substrate.

Step 2 - Waterproofing (wet areas only)

Apply 2-3 coats of waterproof membrane (cement-based brush-on like Dr. Fixit, Pidiproof, Sika 107, or SBR-modified slurry):
1. Bathroom floor: full coverage.
2. Bathroom walls: at least 1 ft up; for shower walls, floor-to-ceiling.
3. Cure 24-48 hours between coats and before tiling.
4. Apply extra waterproof tape at floor-to-wall corners and around drain penetrations.

Step 3 - Layout planning

1. Plan the layout BEFORE applying adhesive.
2. Decide where cuts will fall (cut tiles look better at the edges than in the middle of the room).
3. For square rooms: start from centre, work outward symmetrically.
4. For rectangular rooms: align with the longest, most-visible edge.
5. Mark reference lines on the substrate with chalk or laser.

Step 4 - Mix tile adhesive

1. Use polymer-modified Type 3 (Type 4 for large slabs and outdoor).
2. Mix with water per manufacturer ratio (typically 25-30% water by weight).
3. Use a mixing paddle on a drill at low speed.
4. Let it slake (rest) for 5 minutes, then re-mix briefly.
5. Consistency: smooth peanut-butter - holds shape on a trowel but spreads easily.

Step 5 - Apply adhesive to substrate

1. Use a notched trowel - size matches tile:
   • 6-8 mm notches for ceramic wall tiles.
   • 8-10 mm for vitrified up to 600x600 mm.
   • 10-12 mm for 600x1200 mm.
   • 12-15 mm for 800x1600 mm.
   • 15-20 mm for slabs (1200x2400 mm and up).
2. Apply in a small area at a time (covering only what you can tile in 15-20 mins).
3. Apply in straight notch lines, not swirling motions.

Step 6 - Back-butter large tiles

For tiles 600x1200 mm and larger, also apply a thin layer of adhesive to the BACK of the tile. This ensures full bed coverage and prevents hollow spots that cause tile failure under load. Critical for any large-format installation.

Step 7 - Lay tiles

1. Place each tile firmly on the adhesive bed.
2. Use a rubber mallet to gently tap down and ensure full contact (no hollow spots).
3. Insert tile spacers (1.5 mm for rectified vitrified, 3 mm for ceramic walls) at every joint.
4. Check level after each tile with a spirit level - adjust by adding or removing adhesive.
5. Wipe excess adhesive off the tile face immediately - it sets hard.
6. Continue working in small sections, maintaining straight lines.

Step 8 - Cure adhesive

Don't walk on the floor for 24 hours minimum (48 hours for large slabs and outdoor). Cover the work area to prevent dust settling on wet adhesive.

Step 9 - Grout

1. Remove all tile spacers.
2. Mix grout per manufacturer ratio. Use EPOXY GROUT in wet areas (bathroom, kitchen, balcony), cement grout fine in dry living rooms / bedrooms.
3. Apply with a rubber grout float at a 45° angle, pressing grout fully into the joints.
4. Wipe excess off the tile face with the grout float at a steeper angle.
5. Work in small sections.

Step 10 - Final clean & cure

1. After 20-30 minutes (grout starts setting), wipe the tile face with a damp sponge to remove grout haze.
2. Rinse the sponge frequently in clean water.
3. Light buffing with a dry cloth removes final haze after 2-4 hours.
4. Light foot traffic OK after 24 hours.
5. Full use (heavy furniture, washing) after 72 hours.
6. Apply silicone sealant at floor-to-wall corners and around plumbing fixtures.

Total time for a typical bathroom: 4-5 days (including waterproofing, tile cure, grout cure). For a living room floor: 3-4 days. Don't let a contractor rush this - shortcuts here cause the tile to fail and need to be redone.

Bathroom walls have the most design freedom of any tile surface in a home - they're vertical (no slip concern), the room is small enough that even bold designs work without overwhelming, and water/cleaning needs are easily handled by any wall tile.

Two design directions are dominant in 2026:

Direction 1 - The CONTINUOUS look (luxe spa / hotel bathroom)

Use the SAME large-format tile (often 600x1200 mm or 800x1600 mm) on all four walls, floor-to-ceiling. The eye reads the bathroom as one continuous surface, which makes the space feel much larger and more luxurious. Most popular in marble-look (Calcutta, Statuario, Carrara, beige marble), warm stone-look (limestone, travertine) or large plain neutrals.

When this works best:
1. Small bathrooms - the continuous surface visually enlarges the room.

1. Use vitrified tiles - GVT for the most design variety, DVT (double-charged) for the longest-lasting surface in heavy-use kitchens. Water absorption under 0.5% means spills don't soak in.
2. Pick a matte or lappato (semi-polished) finish. Glossy floors look great new but show every scratch, water mark and oil splash, and they're slippery when wet - both problems you don't want in a working kitchen.
3. Size 600x600 mm or 600x1200 mm is standard; large-format 800x1600 mm or 1200x1200 mm gives a more premium, fewer-grout-lines look in open-plan kitchens.
4. Choose PEI rating IV or V (highest abrasion resistance) on the floor.

For the kitchen backsplash (dado above the counter):

1. Glossy ceramic or vitrified wall tiles wipe clean of oil and steam easily - the biggest practical benefit on a backsplash.
2. Popular designs: subway (75x150 mm or 100x300 mm) for a classic look, picket/scallop for a designer touch, mosaic for texture, large-format marble-look slabs for a high-end seamless look, or a Moroccan/encaustic accent strip behind the cooktop.
3. Avoid heavily textured backsplashes near the cooktop - they trap oil and are hard to clean.

For the bathroom floor:

1. Anti-skid vitrified tiles are essential - look for R10 or R11 slip-resistance rating. The slight surface texture stays safe under bare wet feet.
2. Matte or lightly textured finish only - glossy bathroom floors are a serious slip hazard.
3. 300x300 mm or 600x600 mm work in most bathrooms. For shower floors specifically, small-format mosaic (25x25 mm or 50x50 mm) gives the most grip + better drainage to the floor drain.

For bathroom walls:

1. Ceramic or vitrified wall tiles - both work. Glossy is fine on walls since slip isn't an issue.

Critical installation requirement:

Outdoor tile MUST be laid with a slope of 1-2% towards a floor trap, drain channel or open edge for drainage. Standing water is the single biggest cause of outdoor tile failure - it eventually finds a crack, leaks into the slab below, and grows mould. On balconies, the slope is towards the open edge (with a thin drip line). On terraces, towards a floor trap. On garden paths, towards the lawn or a drainage channel.

4. Cobble-look or paver-look in stone tones - for driveways and the entrance stretch of parking that's visible from the road.

5. Grip-pattern (raised dots / lines) tiles specifically on parking ramps. Functional, and now available in design colours rather than just industrial yellow.

Avoid:
1. Any tile under 9 mm thick - cracks under vehicle load.
2. Glossy tile of any kind - slip hazard for vehicles and people.
3. Light cream, white or pale grey - every oil stain, tyre mark and bit of dust shows. Maintenance nightmare.
4. Small format mosaic - too many grout joints, grout fails fast under vehicle scrubbing.

Shape - how it changes the room:

1. Square tiles (300x300, 600x600, 800x800, 1200x1200 mm) - clean, classic, easy to lay, easy to plan. Works everywhere.

2. Rectangular tiles (600x1200, 800x1600, 200x400 mm wood-look planks) - directional, so orientation matters. Laid lengthwise along a narrow room, they visually stretch it. 1. As a rough rule, the tile should look proportional to the room. A 1200x600 mm tile in a 6x6 ft bathroom looks awkward (too few tiles, dominated by cuts); 300x300 or 600x300 works better.
2. Conversely, 300x300 in a 20x20 ft living room looks fussy and busy - go to 600x600 mm at least, 800x800 or 1200x600 ideally.

Floor-and-wall pairing is where most tile design happens - and where most tile design goes wrong. Pick the wrong floor against the wall and the room reads broken, cold or busy. Get the pairing right and the room feels designed.

Three winning floor-and-wall strategies:

STRATEGY 1 - CONTINUOUS (the luxe spa / hotel-bathroom look)

Use the SAME tile (or very similar tile in the same colour family) on floor and walls. Most popular in:
1. Master bathrooms - same marble-look large-format floor and walls. Hotel-spa feel.
2. Powder rooms - same patterned tile floor and walls (bold small-room statement).
3. Walk-in showers - same anti-skid tile floor and walls.
4. Open-plan kitchens - same wood-look floor that flows up onto a half-height wall behind the cooktop.

Risk: pattern floor + busy wall + decorative furniture = visual chaos. Walls MUST be plain.

Designer rules across all three strategies:

1. ONE bold surface per room. Floor OR feature wall, not both. Otherwise the room has two competing focal points.

2. MATCH THE COLOUR FAMILY. Warm-tone floor with warm-tone walls, cool with cool. Mixing a warm cappuccino floor with a cool grey wall reads as broken.

Mixing tile sizes in one space is a designer move that can add real visual interest - large-format floor with a small mosaic shower, plain large walls with a small subway accent, a wood-look plank living-room floor flowing into a large-format bathroom. Done well, it creates rhythm and zones; done badly, it looks chaotic.

Combinations that consistently work:

1. Large-format bathroom floor (600x1200 mm) + small mosaic shower floor (25x25 mm or 50x50 mm). The large-format keeps the main bathroom floor calm and luxurious; the small mosaic in the shower gives grip (lots of grout joints = slip-safe) AND lets the floor slope evenly towards the drain. Industry-standard combo for walk-in showers.

2. Large-format walls (600x1200 mm marble-look) + small mosaic basin wall or feature niche. The plain large walls calm the room; the mosaic adds a focused jewel-like feature behind the basin or in a shower niche.

6. Same finish across sizes is safest. Mixing a glossy large-format with a matte small mosaic in the same colour family can work, but is harder - try matte across both for the easiest pairing.

What to AVOID:
1. Random mixing - three tile sizes scattered across a single floor without purpose. Looks like the fabricator ran out of one tile and used another.
2. Big-on-big-on-big - three large-formats in the same colour scheme can feel monumental but also clinical.

Statement floor vs statement wall is one of the most common dilemmas in tile design, and the answer is - pick ONE per room. Both can work beautifully, but doing both in the same room creates two competing focal points and the room loses its anchor.

Statement FLOOR is the better choice when:

1. The room is LARGE and OPEN. Open-plan living rooms, large foyers, premium kitchens, formal dining rooms - these need a strong floor to anchor the space visually. A patterned Moroccan floor, a terrazzo entry, a book-matched marble floor all give the room its centre of gravity.

2. The room has LIMITED WALL SURFACE visible. If you have lots of furniture against the walls (sofas, sideboards, tall wardrobes, large art), most of your walls are covered anyway - a feature wall would be hidden. The floor stays visible 100% of the time.

3. The FLOOR IS THE NATURAL FOCAL POINT - foyers (the first thing you see), formal dining (where the table sits on the floor as the centrepiece), premium kitchens (where the island sits on the floor).

4. You want a VINTAGE / MEDITERRANEAN / Bohemian feel. Patterned floor + plain walls is the classic look from Spanish riads, Moroccan palaces, traditional Indian homes.

5. You're building from scratch and the floor is the first thing decided.

Statement WALL is the better choice when:

CEMENT GROUT - the traditional default:

1. Porous - absorbs water like a sponge. In bathroom floors and kitchen back-splashes, this means stains, water marks, and slow yellowing.
2. Mildew growth - porous cement grout in damp areas is a perfect home for mildew. Bathroom grout typically grows visible black mildew within 1-2 years if not sealed.
3. Cracks - cement grout doesn't flex, so any slight substrate movement causes cracks at the grout joints.
4. Needs SEALING after installation and re-sealing every 1-2 years to slow water absorption.
5. Stains easily - coffee, oil, wine, turmeric all leave permanent marks if not wiped immediately.

When cement grout is fine:
1. Living room and bedroom floors (dry).
2. Dry feature walls indoors.
3. Tight budgets where the tile is not in a wet area.

EPOXY GROUT - the modern standard for wet areas:

Grout is one of those things buyers ignore until it goes wrong - and when it does (it stains, cracks or yellows), it ruins the look of an otherwise beautiful tile job. Choosing the right grout colour AND material at the start saves the headache.

Grout colour - three approaches:

1. Matching grout (same shade as the tile) - gives a clean, continuous, seamless look where the eye reads the floor or wall as one surface. This is the default for marble-look tiles, wood-look planks, large-format tiles in living rooms and bedrooms, and any scheme where you want the tile to be the hero without the grid distracting.

2. Contrasting grout - usually a darker grout against a light tile (or vice versa). Emphasises the grid and pattern. Best for: subway tiles on backsplashes (the classic white subway + dark grey grout look), geometric patterns, hexagonal tiles, Moroccan/encaustic prints, mosaic borders. The contrast IS the design.

3. Neutral mid-grey - a safe all-rounder that hides stains well, goes with almost any tile colour and ages gracefully. The reliable choice when you don't want to commit to either matching or strong contrast.

A quick rule for wet areas: avoid pure white grout in bathroom floors and kitchen backsplashes. It looks pristine for two weeks, then quietly turns yellow and grey from soap scum, oil and water marks. Off-white, light beige or mid-grey hide this far better.

Grout material - two options that matter:

1. Cement grout (the traditional, default choice). Made from cement, sand, water and pigment. Affordable, easy for any tile fabricator to mix and apply, available in a wide range of colours. The catch: cement grout is porous, so in wet areas (bathrooms, kitchen backsplashes) it absorbs water and stains over time, and can grow mildew if not sealed. If you use cement grout, seal it with a grout sealer after installation and re-seal every 1-2 years.

2. Epoxy grout (the upgrade - and our recommendation for kitchens, bathrooms, balconies, outdoor and anywhere water/oil is in play). Made from epoxy resins and a hardener. Completely waterproof, stain-resistant, doesn't crack, doesn't need sealing, and lasts decades without yellowing. Common brand names you'll see: MYK Laticrete, Bostik, ARDEX, Roff. The trade-off: epoxy grout costs roughly 2-3× more than cement grout and takes a more skilled fabricator to apply (it sets fast and is harder to clean off the tile face). When to use which:

Joint width: 1.5-2 mm for vitrified/rectified tiles (very tight, clean lines), 3 mm for ceramic walls, 5 mm for terracotta and rustic finishes. Wider joints show more grout, so the colour choice matters more.

Waterproofing is the single most important - and most overlooked - step in any tile installation in a wet area. The mistake most people make is assuming that 'tile + grout' is waterproof. It isn't. Tile itself is water-resistant on the surface, but water seeps through grout joints (especially cement grout) and around plumbing penetrations into the substrate underneath, where it causes the real damage - leaks into the floor below, swelling, mould and tile detachment. Real waterproofing happens BEFORE the tile is laid.

The 4-step waterproofing process:

1. Surface preparation. Clean the substrate of dust, oil and loose material. Make sure it's level (no low spots that will pool water), structurally sound (no cracks), and dry. Any existing cracks must be repaired with a polymer-modified mortar before the membrane goes on.

2. Apply a waterproof membrane. This is the actual barrier. Options:
   • Cement-based brush-on coatings: Dr. Fixit Waterproof, Pidiproof LW+, Sika 107, ARDEX-WPC. Apply 2-3 coats with a brush or roller.
   • SBR-modified cement slurry (mix SBR latex with cement and water).
   • Polyurethane (PU) liquid membranes - more expensive but most flexible.
   • PVC sheet membranes - used in commercial and luxury bathrooms.
Coverage: full floor + at least 1 ft up the wall on shower walls; in walk-in showers, take it floor-to-ceiling on the three wet walls.

3. Let the membrane cure for 24-48 hours before tiling. Don't rush this - adhesive applied over uncured membrane will fail.

4. Tile, then grout with EPOXY grout (not cement grout) on all joints. Epoxy grout is non-absorbent and stays watertight; cement grout is porous and lets water through.

Critical detail areas where leaks actually happen:

1. Floor-to-wall corner junctions - these always crack first because the floor and wall move slightly independently. Apply an extra layer of waterproof tape or a polymer fillet at every corner before the second membrane coat.

2. Around floor traps, drain outlets and pipe penetrations - water finds the smallest gap. Apply membrane right up to the drain rim, and after tiling, seal the tile-to-drain joint with a quality bathroom silicone (sanitary grade, mould-resistant). Re-check this silicone every 2-3 years.

3. Shower thresholds - the floor INSIDE the shower must slope towards the drain (about 1-2% slope), not away. Even with perfect membrane, a back-sloping floor will pool water at the threshold and leak it onto the bathroom floor.

4. Balcony and terrace slopes - must drain TOWARDS the floor trap, never away from it. Standing water on a balcony will eventually find a crack and leak into the room below.

5. Sealant joints around basins, taps, sink corners - these are the joints that age and crack first. Inspect once a year and re-silicone if you see any gap or yellowing.

Don't skip waterproofing to save cost. A waterproofing job for a typical 5x7 ft bathroom costs Rs 8,000-15,000 in materials and labour. Fixing a water leak that damages the floor below costs ten times that - plus you have to chip up all the tiles.

Tile product spec sheets and box labels list a dozen technical properties that can look confusing if you've never bought tile before. Once you know what the key numbers mean, picking the right tile becomes a straightforward checklist.

Here are the specs that actually matter, and what they mean:

1. PEI RATING (Porcelain Enamel Institute Class I to V) - measures how much abrasion the tile surface can take.
1. Class I - light foot traffic, walls only. Bathroom walls.
2. Class II - light residential, walls and bathroom floors.
3. Class III - RESIDENTIAL FLOORS. Standard for bedrooms, living rooms, dining.
4. Class IV - HIGH-TRAFFIC residential and light commercial. Kitchens, foyers, hallways, small offices.
5. Class V - HEAVY COMMERCIAL. Hotel lobbies, restaurants, retail floors, parking, industrial.

For homes, look for Class III for bedrooms/living, Class IV for kitchens/foyers.

2. WATER ABSORPTION (%) - how much water the tile body absorbs.

Tile is one of the most low-maintenance surfaces you can have at home - but a little routine care extends its life and keeps it looking new for 20-30 years. The common mistakes (abrasive scrubbing, harsh acid cleaners) actually shorten tile life unnecessarily.

Daily / weekly care:

1. Sweep or vacuum the floor to remove dust, grit and small debris. This is the single most important habit - grit underfoot acts like sandpaper, slowly dulling the surface and creating fine scratches that show up as a hazy finish over time. Daily sweep in high-traffic areas (foyer, living, kitchen).

4. Deep-clean grout in bathrooms with a grout-specific cleaner (or a mild hydrogen peroxide solution) to remove any mildew or discolouration.

Cleaning agents to USE:
1. Mild neutral-pH detergent (any dish soap, floor cleaner labelled 'neutral pH').
2. Warm water.
3. Mild liquid soap for routine cleaning.
4. Tile-specific cleaners (Dr. Fixit Tile Cleaner, Bostik, ARDEX) for deep clean.
5. Microfibre mop heads (gentler than rough cotton or sponge mops).

Cleaning agents to AVOID:
1. Abrasive scouring pads, steel wool, scratch pads - physically scratch the tile surface, dull glossy finishes, damage anti-skid textures.
2. Harsh acidic cleaners (strong hydrochloric acid, citric-acid heavy products) - etch and dull tile surfaces, damage cement grout, can corrode natural stone.
3. Bleach on cement grout - can discolour pigmented grout. OK on white grout, but use sparingly.
4. Vinegar on natural stone tiles (real marble, travertine, limestone) - the acid etches the surface and creates dull spots. Fine on vitrified tiles, dangerous on natural stone.
5. Oil-based and wax-based cleaners - leave residue that builds up and attracts dirt.
6. Strong floor polish or wax - not designed for tile; can make floors slippery and dull over time.

Tile-specific situations:

1. Bathroom mildew on grout: scrub with a brush and a mild hydrogen peroxide solution (1:1 with water). For stubborn mildew, a dedicated mildew remover. Re-grout if the cement grout is permanently stained.

2. Kitchen oil splash on backsplash: warm water + dish soap will get 95% of it. For dried-on oil, a mild degreaser spray, then wipe.

3. Hard water marks on showers: a mild lime-scale remover (acid-based) is OK on vitrified tile. NOT on natural stone - use a baking-soda paste instead.

4. Coffee/wine stain on light tile: act fast with warm water + dish soap. If set, a paste of baking soda and water, left for 10 minutes, then scrubbed gently.

With basic care, a quality vitrified tile floor stays in like-new condition for 20-30 years. Most damage comes from abrasive cleaning, not from foot traffic - so treat the surface gently and it'll outlast almost everything else in the house.

Chipped and cracked tiles are inevitable over a 20-year tile lifetime - dropped utensils, moved furniture, foundation settling, occasional impact damage. The good news is most damage is repairable, and proper installation (with grout joints and wastage tiles in storage) makes repair straightforward.

For SMALL CHIPS (under 5 mm) - the patch method:

1. Clean the chipped area thoroughly with a damp cloth, then dry it.
2. Apply a colour-matched tile filler or epoxy putty. Products: Pidilite Quikfix Tile Putty, Roff tile repair epoxy, ARDEX X repair epoxy.
3. Press the filler into the chip with a flat blade or putty knife.
4. Smooth flush with the surrounding tile surface.
5. Wipe off excess immediately before it sets.
6. Let cure 24 hours.
7. If colour mismatch is visible, lightly touch up with a tile-specific paint pen or a dab of acrylic paint matched to the tile.

For HAIRLINE CRACKS - the seal method:

1. Clean and dry the crack carefully.
2. Apply a thin bead of epoxy crack filler or super-thin epoxy adhesive into the crack.
3. Wipe excess off the surface immediately.
4. Let cure 24 hours.
5. Hairline cracks in a non-wet area are mostly cosmetic. In a wet area (bathroom floor), the crack must be sealed to prevent water seepage into the substrate.

For MAJOR CHIPS, BROKEN TILES, or LARGE CRACKS - the full replacement method:

Step 1 - Remove the broken tile carefully. Cover surrounding tiles with painter's tape and cardboard to protect them. Use a chisel and hammer (or a tile cutter blade) to break the damaged tile into pieces from the centre outward. Take care not to damage neighbouring tiles or chip them at the edges.

Step 2 - Chip out the old adhesive from the substrate. Get back to a clean, flat surface that matches the level of the surrounding tiles. Vacuum out dust.

Step 3 - Apply new tile adhesive (same Type 3 polymer-modified adhesive as the original installation). Use a notched trowel for even spread. Back-butter the replacement tile if it's large-format.

Step 4 - Lay the replacement tile (your wastage spare). Set it level with the surrounding tiles using a spirit level. Use tile spacers in the joints to match the existing grout width.

Step 5 - Let adhesive cure 24 hours undisturbed.

Step 6 - Remove spacers. Grout the joints around the new tile with grout matched to the existing colour (cement grout in dry areas, epoxy grout in wet). Apply with a grout float, wipe excess off the tile face immediately.

Step 7 - After 30 minutes, wipe the tile face with a damp sponge to remove grout haze. Light buff with a dry cloth after 2-4 hours.

Step 8 - Full use after 72 hours.

Why ordering 10% wastage matters here:

When a tile chips or cracks 2-3 years after installation, you'll need to replace it with an IDENTICAL tile - same SKU, same shade, same batch ideally. Tile batches are produced in runs and shade can vary slightly between batches. Designs are also regularly discontinued.

If you have wastage spares stored in their original boxes (clearly labelled with the SKU and batch number), repair is a simple swap. If you don't, you face:
1. Hunting for the same tile across multiple suppliers.
2. Settling for a shade-different replacement that doesn't match.
3. Worst case - re-tiling a whole area or room to maintain visual consistency.

Store your wastage spares in their original boxes in a dry place. Note the SKU code and the room they came from. A small investment of cupboard space saves you from a major re-tiling job later.

When to call a professional vs DIY:

1. DIY: small chip patching, single broken tile replacement in a non-wet area.
2. Call a professional: multiple broken tiles, broken tile in a wet area (requires waterproofing check), cracked tiles in heavily-trafficked areas, structural cracking that suggests substrate movement, broken slab tiles (heavy and hard to handle), broken parking floor tiles (need precise level for vehicles).

The 'what should I floor with' decision is one of the biggest in any home - it's the largest surface area, hardest to change later, and sets the entire mood. Most homes today actually use a mix: vitrified tile in the rooms that need durability and water-resistance, real wood in the rooms that need warmth, and real marble in the spots that justify the cost and maintenance.

VITRIFIED TILE - the workhorse

Cost: Rs 60-300+ per sq ft. The most affordable of the three at every quality tier.

Maintenance: lowest. Wipe-clean with a damp mop, no sealing, no polishing, no annual treatment. Lasts 20-30 years looking essentially unchanged.

Durability: excellent. Fully waterproof, scratch-resistant (vitrified body), heat-resistant, handles dropped objects.

Design range: vast. Modern wood-look, marble-look, stone-look, terrazzo, Moroccan, concrete-look, plain neutrals - all available in vitrified. Hard to distinguish from real wood / marble in good lighting.

Feel: cool, hard, slightly louder underfoot than wood. Doesn't have the warm springy feel of real timber.

Best for: kitchens, bathrooms, balconies, outdoor patios, high-traffic areas, budget-conscious projects, projects where maintenance has to be low.

REAL MARBLE - the natural luxury

Cost: Rs 250-800+ per sq ft (Indian marble: Makrana, Banswara, Italian marble: Carrara, Calcutta, Statuario).

Maintenance: high. Marble is porous - needs sealing every 1-2 years to prevent staining. Wine, oil, citrus, turmeric, coffee can permanently stain. Acidic cleaners and vinegar etch (dull) the surface. Foot traffic and grit slowly polish the surface in patterns.

Durability: 30-50 years with care. Develops patina over time (some buyers love this, some don't).

Design: natural variation - each slab is unique with its own veining. This is part of the appeal, but also means matching new pieces to existing is hard if you ever need replacement.

Feel: cool, naturally heavy and dense underfoot, slightly slippery when wet.

Best for: foyer floor (welcomes you with luxury), formal living room (statement piece), powder room (luxury detail in a small area), dining floor (premium entertaining feel), pooja unit (traditional). NOT recommended for kitchens (stains from oil/curry/wine) or bathroom floors (slip + sealing maintenance).

REAL HARDWOOD - the warmest underfoot

Cost: Rs 300-1000+ per sq ft for solid hardwood (teak, walnut, oak); Rs 200-500 per sq ft for engineered hardwood (thin real-wood top layer on a plywood base).

Maintenance: high. Solid hardwood needs annual polishing, refinishing every 5-7 years (sanding back the surface and re-staining). Cannot tolerate water exposure - spills, wet feet, humidity all damage real wood. Engineered hardwood is slightly more forgiving.

Durability: 20-30 years for solid hardwood (with refinishing), 10-20 for engineered. The ability to sand and refinish is a real advantage - you can refresh the look of a wood floor without replacing it.

Design: natural grain, each plank unique. Patina improves with age. Available in teak (classic Indian), walnut (premium), oak (Scandi), and a range of other species.

Feel: warmest underfoot, slightly springy (compared to tile / marble), quietest. The single best floor for bare feet.

Best for: master bedroom (warm, quiet, comfortable bare feet), living room with limited child / pet activity, formal dining (in a non-humid climate). NOT recommended for kitchens, bathrooms, balconies, outdoor, or any wet area.

The common smart split most Indian homes use today:

1. Living room floor - real wood (or wood-look tile if budget / maintenance is a concern).
2. Master bedroom - real wood (best bedroom floor).
3. Other bedrooms - wood-look tile or vitrified.
4. Kitchen - vitrified (large-format, matte).
5. Bathrooms - vitrified (anti-skid, marble-look or wood-look).
6. Foyer - real marble (statement) or premium marble-look slab.
7. Balcony / terrace - outdoor-rated vitrified.

Ordering the exact square footage of your floor or wall is one of the most common mistakes in a tiling project, because it leaves zero margin for the things that always happen - cuts, breakage and a future repair. The industry-standard answer is to order 10% extra by default, and more for specific situations.

Why 10% baseline:

1. Cutting waste - every room has corners, edges, doorways, pipe penetrations and irregular dimensions, so the fabricator has to cut tiles to fit. The cut-off pieces are usually unusable elsewhere, so they're wastage. On a typical room this alone is 5-7% of the area.

2. Transit breakage - 2-3% of tiles arrive broken even with careful packing (tiles are fragile). This is normal industry-wide and absorbed by the 10% buffer.

3. Future repairs - if a tile chips, cracks or stains 2-3 years after installation, you'll want a spare in the same shade. Tile batches are produced in runs and the exact shade may not be available later - designs are sometimes discontinued entirely. A few extra boxes in storage save you from re-tiling a whole room over one broken piece.

When to order MORE than 10% - bump it to 15-20% for these cases:

1. Diagonal or herringbone layouts - diagonal cuts mean almost every perimeter tile is cut, and the off-cut shapes are awkward to reuse. Wastage easily climbs to 15-18%.

2. Large-format tiles (1200x600 mm, 800x1600 mm, slab tiles 1200x2400 mm) - each cut produces a larger unusable off-cut. Wastage often reaches 18-20%.

3. Patterned or directional tiles - Moroccan, terrazzo, wood-look planks, marble-look with veining all need pattern matching across the floor, which forces the fabricator to select specific orientations and discard tiles where the pattern doesn't align.

4. Multiple small rooms with many cuts (bathrooms, utility areas) - small rooms have a high perimeter-to-area ratio, so cut wastage is proportionally higher.

How to calculate: take the exact floor/wall area in square feet → multiply by 1.10 (or 1.20 for the special cases above) → that's your order quantity. Round up to the nearest full box, since tiles are sold by the box.

Tiles are inherently brittle and a small amount of breakage in transit is unavoidable, even with careful packing. The industry-accepted norm in India is roughly 2-3% breakage per order - which is one of the reasons every good fabricator recommends ordering at least 10% extra tiles as wastage.

Our policy is straightforward:

Within the 10% wastage buffer - small breakage is absorbed by your wastage margin and doesn't trigger a replacement.

Above 10% breakage - we replace the broken tiles free of charge, because that level of damage isn't normal transit loss.

If you receive damaged tiles, please follow this process so we can sort it out quickly:

1. Inspect the order at the time of delivery. Open the boxes and check the top, middle and bottom of each pallet - that's where most transit damage hides.

2. Note any visible damage on the delivery receipt before signing off. This documents the issue at handover and makes the claim straightforward.

3. Send 4-6 clear photos to our support team within 24 hours of delivery - close-ups of the broken tiles and a wider shot of the packaging so we can see what happened in transit.

4. Our team reviews the photos against the order size and the 10% threshold, and arranges a replacement for breakage that exceeds the buffer.

Because tiles are heavy, fragile and supplied in shade-matched production batches, we're unable to accept returns or exchanges once an order is placed and delivered. We'd rather be upfront about this so there are no surprises - please double-check the design, shade, size and total quantity (including the recommended 10% wastage) before you confirm, and if you're unsure, order a sample tile or visit our Experience Centre first.

That said, we replace tiles in two specific situations where the problem is on our side:

Case 1 - Wrong product delivered

If the tile that arrives differs from what you ordered - different SKU, design, shade, size, finish or thickness - that's a mistake on our side and we put it right. To raise this:
1. Inspect the delivery against your order confirmation at the time of receipt.
2. Note the discrepancy on the delivery receipt before signing off.
3. Send us 4-6 photos (close-ups of the tile + the order/SKU label) within 24 hours of delivery.
4. We'll verify against your order and arrange the correct replacement promptly.

Case 2 - Breakage above 10% of the order quantity

Tiles can break in transit even with careful packing - the industry norm is 2-3% breakage per order, which is why we recommend buying with 10% wastage built in. That buffer covers normal transit damage and cutting waste during installation.

If, however, more than 10% of the tiles in your order arrive broken, that's beyond normal transit loss and we replace the excess broken tiles free of charge. The process is the same: inspect at delivery, note on the receipt, send 4-6 photos to our support team within 24 hours, and we'll arrange a replacement.

What we cannot accept:

1. Returns for change of mind, change of design, or 'doesn't match my expectations' - samples and store visits exist to prevent exactly this.
2. Claims raised after 24 hours of delivery (transit damage is hard to verify after the tiles have left the original packaging).
3. Damage caused after delivery (during storage, cutting, or installation by your fabricator).
4. Tiles that have already been laid or cut.

Tiles have become the go-to surface material in modern Indian interiors because they combine durability, design range and practical performance in a way no other surface material matches. Here's why designers reach for tile first.

1. Durability. A good vitrified tile floor lasts 25-30 years with basic care - far longer than hardwood, carpet, vinyl or laminate flooring. Surfaces hold their finish even in high-traffic homes, kitchens and entrances.

2. Low maintenance. Cleaning is a wipe with a damp cloth and mild detergent. No polishing (unlike wood and natural stone), no special chemicals, no annual sealing (for vitrified - natural stone tiles do need sealing). Compare to a wood floor that needs sanding and re-polishing every 5-7 years.

3. Water and moisture resistance. Vitrified tiles have under 0.5% water absorption, so they're the right surface for kitchens (spills, steam, oil), bathrooms (water, soap, humidity), balconies (rain) and outdoor patios. Real wood, carpet and most laminates fail in these conditions.

4. Hygiene. Non-porous tile surfaces don't harbour bacteria, dust mites, allergens or mould - especially important in kitchens and bathrooms, and for households with allergies or respiratory issues. This is one of the reasons hospitals and clinics tile extensively.

5. Massive design range. Modern tile can convincingly imitate almost any surface - wood (plank tiles), marble (large-format slabs), natural stone, terrazzo, concrete, fabric, Moroccan tilework, leather effects, brushed metal. You get the look of expensive materials with tile's durability and maintenance profile.

6. Thermal conductivity. Tile conducts heat efficiently, which makes it ideal for underfloor heating systems in cold climates. In hot Indian summers, cool tile underfoot is also a comfort feature.

7. Fire resistance. Tiles are non-combustible and don't release toxic smoke - important around cooktops, fireplaces and on commercial floors with fire-safety requirements.

8. Cost-effective relative to natural materials. A wood-look porcelain plank costs a fraction of real hardwood; a marble-look large-format tile costs a fraction of marble slab - with comparable visual impact and dramatically lower maintenance.
